After much (much!) perusing and in-depth study of the American Girl catalog, Maya has determined that she looks most like Emily and has decided that Emily is pretty much the only thing she wants for her birthday. (Aside from that puppy we'll never get...) I think we're going to have to do LOTS of American Girl book reading before I can stomach purchasing a doll this expensive. Seriously?! Talk to me, American Girl experts. Does your daughter really love/cherish/play with this thing to the tune of $95?! Because, wow.
On another note, I think I'm going to choose to be represented by Julie because I dig her groovy style and envy her beautiful hair.
Which American Girl are you?

my girls both cherish their dolls. worth every penny(that i didn't spend-woohoo:) yea for in-laws! they play with them A TON. we've even taken them to the bistro here in dallas for brunch(so fun!) thats definitely something you'll have to do when you come up to visit family the next time you're up here. my girls love to take them places, dress them up(i remember aubrey just held her for an hour without moving when we first got them!). you won't regret this purchase. it will be a wonderful memory for maya!
oh, and my girls have kitt and ruthie(the best friends dolls, which i think is perfect for them:) i don't know which american girl doll i would be. but i think felicity is perdy:)
I played with mine like there was no tomorrow and read and re-read the books. I was very much a doll girl so that probably made a difference too.
My niece didn't play with hers as much as I played with mine but she got it when she was a little older, like 9 or 10, so that didn't leave her a lot of doll playing years. So I say the younger the better with this one.
Oh, and I had Samantha, which they don't have anymore. I think I probably looked the most like her.
Kaitlin has Kitt and ADORES her. I have found knock off furniture and clothes on ebay, target, and quilted bear in utah. Kaitlin loves the books and movie too.
Oh, they're so pretty. Good idea for the birthday list!
If you get way into it, my neighbor makes amazing custom matching American Girl clothing for the doll and her owner. Seriously.
I think I'm going to take Stella to the American Doll store in the city for her birthday and let her pick out a doll. Then you can have lunch with your doll. I hear it is quite the thing.
We have Kit and a Just Like You doll at our house. The girls absolutely love them and play with them together. I didn't want to fork up the money for 2 dolls at Christmas, but to see their faces was worth it. They thought I would NEVER pay that much. I have to say that I'd rather buy an American Girl doll than 5 Barbies or however many polly pocket things for the same amount of money. They are wholesome and the stories that go along with them are wonderful. I also have an endless birthday/Christmas list for accessories for years to come!
I had Samantha growing up and cherished her. I didn't get her until I was 9 but still played a lot with her over the years. Now she sits on my daughter's shelf in the nursery until she is old enough to play with her. I think she is worth every penny! I also love the books and the movies as well. I would much rather spend my money on these dolls than barbies any day.
Two of my younger sisters had these as girls and collected accessories/furniture over the years. They are in their 20s now and cherish them.
I'm SO getting one for my girls. Millie has seen the catalog and basically perused it for an hour. I'm trying to figure out the right age. 6 might just be it!
If Maya is wanting it then chances are she will love her and play with her. I wanted to get my girls these dolls for Christmas last year, but they didn't know anything about them and I didn't want to "fork over the money", so I got the "My Generation" dolls from Target(much cheaper) to see how much they'd like them. They will sometimes play with them, then the next day I'll find them on the floor face down.(my girl are 6 and 3) American Girl, I heard, uses real hair instead of plastic hair, so it is MUCH easier to come any snarles out of which will probably occur often. So I guess what I'm saying is go for the American Girl, especially if she is asking for one. She will treat it right.
Find out exactly why she's wanting the doll. My daughter begged for Bitty Baby, so we got the doll and a bunch of accessories. It turns out she just liked the little accessories. She couldn't have care less about the doll itself.
I was pretty cool about American Girl dolls until I went to the store in NYC and saw how over the top it all was. It just seems so . . . excessive. Hordes of people willing to pay $15 to have their dolls hair braided? Are you kidding me??? My 8 year old daughter kind of wants one so I told her it's the Target doll or nothing.
Calico Critters are a lot more popular at our house. They are cheaper ( though definitely not cheap) and a lot cuter, if you ask me. If you have an animal lover, I'd highly recommend them.
This is an old post so you might not see this, but Hannah has several (she has been collecting for years) and LOVES them. I was (am still embarrassingly enough) a fan of these dolls too. You'll have to check out the AG stores too. Fun to go for dinner with your doll.
